The genealogy research cycle

One tool I always share with new genealogists is the genealogy research cycle. It’s a straightforward framework for tackling each research question step by step. Using it keeps you organized and focused, making it easier to dig deep into one inquiry at a time without getting overwhelmed.
Start with what you know. Review information you already have about your family.
Formulate a research question. Pick a family line and ancestor, and decide what specific information you want to find out about that person. Create an entry in your research log for this question.
Select records to search. Determine which records and resources are most likely to answer your question. Vital records? Census or military records? A published history? Make note of this information in your research log.
Conduct the search. This is the fun part. Look for relevant information in the selected records and resources. If necessary, reach out to other information professionals or local history organizations for assistance. Again, document your results in your research log.
Analyze and correlate findings. Examine what you've found and how it relates to what you already know. Address any discrepancies in the information you've gathered. Resolve any contradictions or conflicts if possible. Conduct additional research if needed and update your research log.
Write up your conclusions. Document what you've learned and your reasoning. This may include updating an online family tree, completing a family group sheet with data or some other mechanism. Update your research log..
Share and get feedback. Share your findings with others (researchers, family members, etc.) and consider their input.
Next steps? Based on what you've learned, decide what to research next. Repeat the cycle. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Using this, or a similar research cycle, gives your work structure and keeps your investigations accurate, thorough, and organized. It helps you evaluate and document each piece of information properly, reduces the chance of missing important details, and makes it easier to tackle complex research or work with limited sources. Give it a try. You might be surprised at how much smoother your genealogy research becomes!
