Ancestry.com or FamilySearch - Which should I use?

I'm often asked about the difference between Ancestry.com and FamilySearch, two commonly used platforms and data sources in genealogy research. Most genealogists I know use both platforms to maximize their research potential. The choice often comes down to individual needs, budget, and research focus. I encourage you to check out both. Here are a few key differences:

  • Ownership and access

    • Ancestry.com is a for-profit company requiring a paid subscription for full access.

    • FamilySearch is a free service operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Record collections

    • Ancestry.com has a larger collection of records, including many exclusive databases not available on FamilySearch, including access to records from Newspapers.com, Fold3 and FindaGrave.

    • FamilySearch has a vast collection of microfilmed census and vital records, including international records collections and original images (rather than indexed records).

  • Family tree building

    • Ancestry.com allows users to build both public and private family trees and share trees with other Ancestry.com users.

    • FamilySearch uses a collaborative, single family tree model where all users contribute to one shared tree.

  • DNA testing

    • Ancestry.com offers DNA testing services integrated with their platform.

    • FamilySearch does not offer DNA testing but provides educational resources about genetic genealogy.

  • User interface

    • Ancestry.com generally has a more polished, user-friendly interface.

    • FamilySearch can be a bit more complex to navigate, but it offers powerful research tools if you’re just looking for records.

  • Community support

    • Ancestry.com’s blog provides research tips and historical context. They also sponsor popular genealogy-related media, including Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates.

    • FamilySearch has a strong, supportive user community for research assistance, including an extensive WIKI and continuing education materials.
