Uncovering the Story of the Terrell House, a Historic Bed & Breakfast
This long-term research project focused on uncovering the rich history of the Stanley School in Burnsville, North Carolina—now home to the Terrell House Bed and Breakfast. Dating back to the early 1900s, the former school building holds deep local significance. Our client sought to better understand the origins and evolution of their historic property to create interpretive materials for guests and pursue official historic building designation. Research included a deep dive into the Nettie Fowler McCormick papers held at the Wisconsin Historical Society, where we located correspondence, architectural plans, and accounting records. Additional work involved combing through historic newspaper archives to confirm construction dates and identify the architects behind key phases of the building’s development. The project was open-ended, allowing time for a thorough and thoughtful investigation of this storied site.
